A practical guide to password security — what works, what doesn't, and how to protect yourself
Passwords are the first line of defense for your online accounts. Yet most people still use weak, reused passwords that can be cracked in seconds. This guide explains what makes a password strong, how password cracking works, and how to manage passwords without losing your mind.
Quick start: Use our password generator to create a strong random password, and get a password strength estimate for any password you're considering.
Two factors determine password strength: length and entropy (randomness).
Length is king. A 12-character randomly generated password is exponentially harder to crack than an 8-character one, even if the 8-character one uses symbols. Each additional character multiplies the number of possible combinations.
Here's how long it takes to crack different passwords at modern speeds:
| Password | Type | Time to Crack |
|---|---|---|
password123 |
Common word + numbers | Instant |
P@ssw0rd! |
Common substitutions | Seconds |
Tr0ub4dor&3 |
11 chars, mixed | ~3 days |
correct horse battery staple |
4 random words (25 chars) | Centuries |

16 random chars | Billions of years |

Password managers also autofill login forms, flag weak passwords, and alert you if a site you use has been breached. There's no excuse not to use one — many are free.
A strong password alone isn't enough anymore. Two-factor authentication adds a second layer — usually a code from an app (like Google Authenticator or Authy) or a hardware key (like YubiKey). Even if someone steals your password, they can't log in without the second factor. Enable 2FA on every account that supports it.
Services like HaveIBeenPwned let you check if your email or passwords have appeared in known data breaches. If your password shows up in a breach, change it immediately everywhere you used it. Use our password generator to create a replacement.
